Things to Know

Miss Herbert’s Fourth Grade

2007-2008 School Year

Classroom Procedures and Policies

Welcome to Room 11. I am looking forward to a fantastic year my new fourth graders. The class has impressed me with their positive energy, kindness and enthusiasm for learning. The following information will help you understand our curriculum and classroom procedures.

This is a lot of information to take in, so if you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me. I have an open-door policy and am very willing to clarify, discuss or just chat if needed. My classroom phone number is (248) 823-3508. My email address is Lherbert2@troy.k12.mi.us.

Assignment Notebooks

At the end of each day, homefun assignments, test dates, and other important information will be written in the assignment notebooks. I write the information in the master assignment notebook and display it for the students to copy. It is the student’s responsibility to copy down all the information and make sure they take home the materials (worksheets, textbooks, etc.) necessary to complete their assignments. If they have already turned in an assignment they do not have to copy it in their notebook.

I ask that each night, parents take a look at the assignment notebook, help your child as necessary and then sign the notebook page. The assignment notebook, along with the HomeFun folder, should return to school every day. I will check the notebooks periodically to make sure that they are being filled out properly and that you have signed it.

Homefun Folder

The HomeFun folder is a great way to organize all the papers that come from school. You’ve probably noticed that one side of the folder is for those items that stay at home ("Keep At Home"). The other side of the folder is for homefun, permissions slips, book orders, etc. – those things that need to be returned to school. The folder is a nice way to stay organized and keep it all straight.

Homework/Homefun Policy

All Homefun and due dates will be written in the Assignment Notebooks each night. Homefun can be assignments that were not completed in class and/or other assigned homefun, such as math worksheets, Reading at Home or long-term projects. The Homefun should be returned on the due date.

Students who do not bring in their Homefun on the day that it is due will receive a pink Missing Homefun slip. The note needs to be filled out by the student and then signed by a parent. It should be returned the next school day with the missing assignment. Please make sure the assignment is done before signing the note.  The note lets you and the student know that an assignment is missing and requires the student to explain why it was not turned in. Those students with three or less missing homefun assignments in a marking period will be treated to a pizza party at the end of each marking period.

Any Homefun not turned in after two days will be a "zero" in the grade book. If extenuating circumstances prevent your child from completing his/her homefun, I would appreciate a brief note to that effect. Students will not be allowed to use school phones to call home for forgotten homework.

Weekly Folders - Your weekly progress report

During the course of the week, students collect all work that has been checked and returned in their Weekly Folder. The Weekly Folder will go home each Monday. If your child has any missing assignments for the previous week, a note will be included in the folder. Please review the materials in the folder and sign the folder next to that Monday’s date. Your signature says that you reviewed the papers.  The papers in the folder should not stay in the folder. The folder should come back to school each Tuesday empty

Other

Students are welcome to celebrate their birthdays at school. We usually celebrate a birthday right after lunch or afternoon recess. If a fork or spoon is needed for the treat, please send those along with napkins.  No peanuts please!

Also, as a side note, if you are planning a party for after school hours, we ask that invitations be distributed outside of school. This is done to avoid hurt feelings.

Healthy snacks are allowed every morning (please no candy or cookies). Again, if a fork or spoon is needed, please send that along with the snack.  No juice boxes for snacks, but the students are welcome to bring water bottles.
