This month students have
been learning about elections and the process candidates must go
through to be elected. The
idea of democracy was taught as students discovered the process through which a
candidate must go before he or she becomes the president. It has been important for
students to realize that we live in a democratic republic where we, the people,
have the power to elect whom we want to represent our ideas and opinions about
rules and laws that are made. These
lessons on government were
coupled with a real-life student council election that took place in all
3-5 classrooms at Hill School. The election was a perfect way for students to
apply the knowledge that they had gained from our government lessons to the
actual election we were having in our classroom. We spent a great deal of time
discussing the importance of being informed voters and thoroughly discussed the
qualities that a good student council representative should possess. The
importance of good character over good clothes, athletic skills, or popularity
was emphasized throughout the entire process. Students were encouraged to
honestly evaluate each candidate to determine his or her ability to be an
honest, responsible, and humble representative for our class. Students took the
election very seriously, as they put much effort into their campaigning.
The
quality of the students' speeches and the time and effort that went into their
signs was very impressive. Voting was done privately in a "voting booth" at the
back of our classroom. Although it was a very close race, our
student council reps for the year are Jacob T. and Makayla.
Before the reps attend each meeting, their classmates will have the opportunity
share with them their ideas and concerns to take to the council. It is important
that ALL students have a voice in school activities.
