Region Tour Binders

As we travel to each new stop on our tour of the United States, students keep a record of the things they see and do at each city or landmark.

We use our Social Studies Alive textbooks to learn about 9 different places or landmarks in each of the five regions of the United States.

(A CD that comes with the program provides us with an oral tour guide who gives us information about each tour stop while we follow along in our textbooks.)

After each tour stop, students receive a souvenir from the place they visit. All souvenirs and tickets are kept in an envelope until the end of each region when the souvenirs are used to create scrapbook pages.

(Most souvenirs are pictures that I have printed from the Internet or things that relate to something we saw or did at a specific tour stop.  I  have even contacted parks and other places that we visit to request class sets of brochures, photos, stickers, etc.)

Depending on our mode of transportation in each region, Students also keep the train tickets, boat tickets, plane tickets, etc. that I create for them.  These are considered souvenirs and are also added to their scrapbook pages at the end of each region.

After every three tour stops in each region, students stop and write about what they have learned in teacher-made travel journal pages.  These informational pages become part of their region tour scrapbook as well.

(Students can refer back to their textbooks to recall information they learned and to check for correct spelling.)

I created the travel journal pages to go along with our region tour.  The region tour scrapbook idea is not part of the Social Studies Alive program, so you can feel free to download and use the PDF journal pages.

At the end of each region, students use the souvenirs that they have collected to create fun scrapbook pages.  These pages are in addition to the travel journal pages that contain informational facts about each tour stop.

Both the journal pages and the scrapbook pages from each region become part of each student's region tour binder.  I create a cover for each student,  and they put it in a 1/2" economy view binder.

Along with tests that I create for each region, the region binder is also used as a major part of each student's social studies grade.
