Palms for Parents 101

The Troy School District initiated a special pilot program during the 2003-2004 school year giving four elementary classrooms the opportunity to have a class set of 30 Palm Zire 71 Handhelds and 30 Palm Ultra Thin Keyboards for an entire marking period. We received the Palms at the beginning of November and had them until the end of January.

You might think of a Palm as a portable date book, complete with a to-do list and an address organizer. However, they are truly a handheld computer with great potential in a classroom environment. In fact, there are now hundreds of applications created specifically for educational use. With the use of the special built-in camera on the Palm Zire 71 model, students were able to take pictures and annotate their photos, view photos that I beamed to them that supported our social studies and science curriculum, and even watch educational QuickTime video clips to enhance their understanding of scientific concepts. Using the camera, students could click the shutter, enter notes into the file, and then beam (send) the results to classmates or add images to projects. Music was even integrated into subject lessons with the MP3 player, as students listened to audio books to spur their visual imagination.
