Read More About Our Word Study Centers

Word study is part of our daily routine in Room 13. On Mondays, students take part in a mini-lesson during which they are introduced to new spelling patterns or rules. Throughout the rest of the week, the concepts are reinforced with additional mini-lessons and word study centers.

Three days a week, students rotate through centers where they play games or complete activities that allow them to practice the new spelling patterns.

We put a great deal of effort into creating the games and planning the activities so that they are completely aligned with the patterns for the week. The center activities are intended to help students in both reading and in writing.

While completing the different center activities, students practice recognizing the patterns so that they can read the words aloud. They are actively spelling many words with the new patterns as well. Since we often focus on more than one pattern in each unit, many of the games and activities require students to sort words based on their patterns and identify words that share a common pattern.
On one of the three days, students also complete an activity during which they work with the high frequency words that they are studying for the week.

Centers are a fun and helpful way for students to learn the new patterns!
