Virtual Shopping Spree
Students were sent on an exciting shopping spree to Toys "R" Us in December as part of a math/economics holiday activity.
Each student was told that he or she was sent $500 by a distant relative who won the lottery in California. The students could spend the money at Toys "R" Us, but there were some rules that they needed to follow. Students could spend no more than $100 on themselves, and all extra money would have to send back to the relative if it was not spent during the shopping spree. This rule encouraged students to spend as close to $500 dollars (without exceeding their budget) as they could.
| Students first recorded the name and age of the people for whom they they were planning to buy gifts. This was their preparation for the shopping spree. |

Before visiting the Toys "R" Us Website, students learned how to search for items by name, brand, gender, category, and/or age of recipient. They also learned about Internet safety. |
|
Students kept a log of each item they decided to buy as they shopped.
Some decided to spend their money on one expensive item, and others bought
many smaller items.

Popular items purchased by students included Nintendo Wii games, Webkinzs, stuffed animals, board games, tech toys, and High School Musical-themed gifts . |
