Our
Day Aboard the Titanic
After
reading about the Titanic during our "Disasters" reading unit, we planned a day
on which we would pretend to be sailing on the amazing Titanic. We
constructed a ship in our classroom and brainstormed a day's worth of
activities. Check out the pictures and captions below to learn more about
our exciting day aboard the "Wonder Ship."

| Before the big
day aboard the ship, we worked as a team to construct the ship around our
desks. We cut and measured paper and created windows to attach to
the ship.

On the day of
the launch, we had to get our Passports stamped in South Hampton before we
were allowed to board the ship and leave the country.
|
| Captain
Newingham gave us tickets as we boarded the ship. Students were
assigned to first, second, or third class cabins (desks). Throughout
the day, we got to spend time in each section of the ship.

Some first class
passengers even got to stay in the Parlor Suites. The tickets for
those luxurious rooms cost $3,300 even back in 1912.
|
| The first thing we did was share the special items that we brought along with us in our suitcases (backpacks). Many passengers brought pictures of their family and their pets. |
|
|
|
Next we learned
about the Morse Code, a telegraph code in which letters and numbers are
represented by strings of dots and dashes (short and long signals).
Captain Newingham gave us a copy of the
Morse Code Alphabet and then used an online translator to send us
messages. We had to figure out what she was saying. Morse Code

| Students used a Palm application called InflationMaster® to calculate the rise in prices of goods and services since the launch of the Titanic. |

During snack,
first class passengers were served by the crew and used fancy placemats on
which they placed their food.
|
| During music
class, we practiced a song about the Titanic. We practiced it aboard the
ship and preformed it as a chant.
|
|
|
|
Can you believe
we used laptops on the Titanic? We typed letters (postcards) to our
families telling them about our fabulous day aboard the Titanic.
|
| During tea time,
third class passengers acted as members of the crew and served the first
class passengers in the "formal" dining room.
|
|
|
|
All passengers
aboard the crew sipped on lemonade and indulged in chocolate chip cones.
We all made
sure to use our best manners and etiquette while eating.
|
| During tea time some students acted as pianists and played songs while we ate. All performers did a great job! |

What an exciting
day aboard the "Wonder Ship!" Unlike the original passengers,
students were fortunate enough to go home with a bag full of souvenirs
from the voyage.
