A Big Rig Tour of the Southwest

During our tour of the Southwest, we traveled on a big rig. Students took turns in the driver's seat during the trip. Check out the cool adventures we had!

Our first stop in the Southwest was Monument Valley, home of the original Navajo Indian Reservation.
Our stop in Phoenix was short and sweet.  We couldn't stay long because it is the hottest city in the Southwest.  It's a good thing we had air conditioning in the big rig!

Our trip to Hoover Dam was very informational.  We worked in groups to solve problems that the architects and construction workers faced when building the dam.  We presented our solutions to our classmates.

The Grand Canyon was even bigger than we imagined!!!  Did you know that the canyon is over 1 mile deep?

Perhaps the most lively place we visited in the Southwest was Carlsbad Cavern National Park.  We arrived at sundown, so we were able to see a cloud of bats leave the cave.

During our stop in El Paso, New Mexico we got used to living in a "border city."  We did an activity in which students asked to out themselves in specific roles including:

-an American teacher with many students in her class who speak only Spanish

-an owner of an American factory that is located in Mexico

-a Mexican worker at the American-owned factory

At the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, we learned about how the Texas Freedom Fighters gave their lives to fight for their independence.

In Austin, Texas, we visited the capital building.  It is the largest capital building in the nation!
