We had an exciting journey through the Midwest on a crop duster.  We visited many famous landmarks and cities, including our hometown!

Check out our adventure below!

In St. Louis, Missouri, our crop duster pilots flew right above the Gateway Arch.  This structure was built to honor Lewis and Clark who explored the west.

Most of Iowa looked very similar to this picture.  That's because nearly every inch of Iowa is covered by farms!  It is often referred to as the "Corn State."

Dodge City, Kansas was awesome!  We learned about the cowboys from Texas in the 1870's who drove cattle to Dodge City.  The cattle drives took weeks and months.
After learning about the many jobs that are involved in a real cattle drive, students pretended to work for a cowboy employment agency and created "Help Wanted" posters to advertise the specific jobs.

In South Dakota, we visited the Black Hills where the Mt. Rushmore Memorial is located.  It was amazing to see the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln!  We also were able to see the Crazy Horse Memorial.  This monument was created to honor the Native American man who fought to defend his people and their way of life.

Watch a video tour with information about Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

We were amazed when we flew over the Soo Locks in Michigan!  It was neat to watch how they lift and lower ships up to 1,000 feet long!

During an extra special stop in Calumet, Michigan in our state's upper peninsula, Haley's Aunt Sharon visited our classroom to talk about life in Calumet when it was a booming mining town.  She brought photos of Haley's great grandpa who was a miner at the Quincy Mines.

Aunt Sharon explained how to make pasties, a very delicious and popular food in the upper peninsula.  She even brought some pasties for the students to taste!

In Detroit, we learned about Henry Ford.  In the fall, we visited Greenfield Village where we saw Henry Ford's home, the original Ford Motor Company building,  and a real Model-T.  We watched a movie about how cars were made and how assembly lines and factories became very important for the mass production of automobiles.

While in Detroit, we also pretended to be assembly line workers.  In groups of six, we added parts to a Ford Model T.  Take a look at the pictures below to see how we did our job.

Take an Online Tour of the Ford GT Factory!

Each worker on the assembly line had a job.  Check out the car we made from start to finish.

At O'Hare International Airport, we loved watching the huge planes take off!  Did you know that this airport was voted "The Best Airport in North America" by travelers?

We watched our first Cubs game at Wrigley Field in Chicago!  It was great!  Sammy Sosa hit a homerun, and we all joined in to sing "Take me Out to the Ballgame!"

Perhaps the most exciting part of the Midwest tour was our stop at the Mall of America in Minnesota.  This is NOT your typical shopping experience!  Aside from having over 580 stories, this mall has an amusement park, a NASCAR Speedway, tons of restaurants, a Lego Imagination Center, and even an aquarium!
