Watch Highlight Video

Since our theme for the school year is "Teamwork," we call ourselves TEAM NEWINGHAM.  For this reason, we chose to plan our spring open house around the same theme by presenting Team Newingham SportsCenter, our version of the popular sports news show on ESPN. We showed four of the movies we had made throughout the school year at different times during the evening. The students acted as SportsCenter reporters and news anchors to introduce each movie to the audience in our classroom.

Setting Up the Classroom

We decorated our classroom with all things related to sports.  We created our own jerseys that we hung in the "rafters", made a football field for movie viewing, and constructed a SportsCenter set for the news anchors.

SportsCenter Broadcasts

Since we showed four of our class movies, we had a different SportsCenter News Crew introduce each program.  Each crew consisted of two anchors, an "on-field" reporter, a player being interviewed, and a camera operator.

Ticket Drawings

Before the open house, students decorated tickets for each show and brought them home to give to their parents the day before the open house.  Parents then brought the tickets to the shows on the night of the open house and entered the stubs of their tickets into four different drawings for a framed copy of an autographed Team Newingham photo.  Students conducted a drawing after each edition of Team Newingham SportsCenter.

Our Loyal Fans

Fans of all ages came to watch our SportsCenter show.  Students did an awesome job entertaining their audience!

Baseball Cards

On the other side of the classroom, oversized personalized baseball cards hung above each students' desk with facts that they had written on the back.

Signing Autographs

At their desks, students signed smaller copies of their personalized baseball cards for their "fans."  They also made a list for their parents of the 5 "must see" things in our classroom.

Technology Zone

In the Team Newingham Technology Zone, students and parents were able to visit our classroom website to view pictures and projects that we have done throughout the year.

The Hallway

In the hallway, we had a schedule of our SportsCenter broadcasts with the times that they would be taking place in our classroom.  Students also created their own headlines and captions for Sports Illustrated magazine covers and wrote their own biography poems.

Sports Illustrated Covers

In the hallway, students were stars as they graced covers of Sports Illustrated for Kids.  Team Newingham was even recognized as Team of the Year!
