Meet Mrs. Gordon

I am so excited to have the opportunity, once again, to teach at Hill and share a class with Mrs. Newingham.  This will be my fourth year teaching 3rd grade at Hill, and I am looking forward to a year full of excitement and learning.

I have actually been teaching for 12 years.  My first 6 years of teaching were with Detroit Public Schools, where I taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.  I then taught 2nd grade in Troy for 3 years at Schroeder Elementary.  I feel very fortunate to be teaching in such a great school district.  I am actually a product of Troy Schools.  I attended Wass, Larson, and Athens.  It’s a really neat experience to attend district activities and sit next to colleagues that were former teachers of mine.

After graduating from Athens, I attended Wayne State University and earned a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education with a major in English and a minor in Math.  I then pursued a Masters degree in the Art of Education.  I continued to work at furthering my knowledge about educating children and earned the title of National Board Certified Teacher in 2005.  I love to keep up on the latest research and best practices to keep myself fresh and sharp in the classroom.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family.  My husband and I were very excited to welcome our first child, Elise McKenna, into the world on Jan. 11, 2007.  My second child, Isabella Marie, was born in July of 2009.  When I’m not chasing Elise around or tending to Isabella, I love to scrapbook.  My husband and I also enjoy being outside, whether it’s taking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery, or hiking, biking, and rollerblading.  I also love to shop.  I might hold a record for the most shoes in a person’s closet.  I am a huge sports fan.  My favorite sport to watch is football.

Teaching is my passion.  I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.  I consider myself very lucky because I am blessed to have a job that doesn’t feel like a “job.”  I love coming to school every day.  I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to continue teaching while staying home part-time to raise my daughter.  I’m also blessed to have such an amazing teaching partner to work with.  I know this will be a fabulous school year!
