Reading Recovery® and Reading Support.
Students in first and second grade at Hill have access to reading support at a critical stage in their literacy development. Our reading specialist works with students both individually, and in small groups. As the "Reading Recovery® Teacher" for the building, the students who experience extreme difficulty learning to read and write, receive “one on one” assistance to accelerate their progress in literacy development. Reading Recovery® is an intervention that serves the lowest-achieving first graders—the students who are not catching on to the complex set of concepts that make reading and writing possible. Through Reading Recovery®, students become successful readers and writers within a very short time. Students in both first and second grades who may find reading and writing challenging, continue to be supported by our reading specialist.
ESL.
The Troy School District seeks to provide every child, regardless of national origin or native language, quality and meaningful educational instruction. Consequently, students who are English Language Learners (ELLs), are provided instructional services through our English as a Second Language program designed to meet their unique needs. The program includes services that range from one-on-one basic English language instruction to content tutoring inside the child's classroom.
Instrumental Music.
The Troy School District has an award-winning, renouned instrumental music program that includes band and strings instruction for grades 5 through 12. All district fifth graders will automatically be in band or string orchestra class for the entire school year. The students can choose to study violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or snare drum/bell kit. No previous experience is necessary. Class instruction includes basic sound production and technique, note-reading, elementary ear-training, playing a variety of music styles, and chances for creativity. For optimal progress, band and strings students are encouraged to practice for 15 minutes a day as their homework. Group performance opportunities include a winter concert, a spring concert, and an all-school assembly concert.
Spanish.
Hill Elementary provides 25 minutes of instruction per week in the Spanish language in every class, grades 3 through 5. Research studies indicate that childhood is the optimum time for students to begin to acquire another language. Research has proven that early language learners have a greater understanding of their native tongue, superior problem-solving skills and an increased cultural awareness.

Student/Teacher/Parent Compact for Hill.
It is important to us at Hill Elementary that teacher, parent and student work as a team to provide the best learning experience possible for each and every student. It is our shared responsibility to guide each individual student in achieving his or her greatest potential. In order for a student to reach his or her potential it is important to provide support to students who require intervention and enrichment. Each member of our team has their own separate responsibilities to ensure potential is reached. Our compact outlines these responsibilities. Click here to view Hill's Student/Teacher/Parent Compact.
Parent Involvement Policy.
